The Overman College Consulting Approach and Philosophy

If you have arrived at this page, you may be somewhere in between “We have no clue” to “We need some help.” And that’s okay. My job is to meet you where you are…to give you the answers to your questions, provide the information to be an educated consumer, and help you navigate the process with absolute confidence. Did I already say that I love my job…???

Years of experience has helped me to expertly customize the work I do with each student. And that’s the cool thing about having my own practice and working with a limited number of students in each graduating class. Each student is unique, and their college search and process should be too. At Overman College Consulting, you aren’t a number. I treat my students and families the way I like to be treated…with respect and appreciation for individual traits and character. While I am fond of numbers and data, working with teens has allowed me to channel my inner cheerleader and creative side. When it comes to working on essay brainstorming and essay revisions, you seriously would have a hard time finding anyone more jazzed about that than me. From start to finish, I bring that same level of enthusiasm and support.

I am often asked “Why use a college consultant?” Here are some benefits of doing so:

  • Provide and supplement the guidance and advice that students may or may not be receiving at their high school. Did you know that students at U.S public high schools receive an average of 38 minutes of personal advising on college admissions over 4 years? (Source: U.S. Department of Education)
  • Clear a path through all the “weeds” of extraneous information and focus on what factors matter to each student and family. This is not a one size fits all situation.
  • Receive individual attention during the college search. I am dedicated to my students and families and help them identify best fit colleges, perform career assessments, select courses, have a plan for standardized testing, discuss teacher recommendations, develop a resume, perform essay brainstorming exercises and essay feedback, supervise completing applications, offer mock interviews, discuss the financial aid process, and identify scholarship opportunities.
  • Preserve the family relationship by being the task master and holding students accountable for adhering to timelines and schedules. I develop a relationship of trust where students are willing to listen to my suggestions and advice. Your ideas may seem unwelcome. Parents, don’t be offended. This is often the way it is with teens. I manage anxiety and expectations.
  • Identify colleges and programs that make sense for each student. As a member of 5 professional associations and frequent conference attendee, I have an extensive network and knowledge base. I have toured over 200 colleges and attend numerous counselor updates each year. I stay current on the latest in college admissions news and trends. It’s my continuing education, and it actually energizes me. I am your college knowledge source.
